"Postmodern media manipulates time and space". To what extent does this definition apply to texts you have studied?

TASK 1:

  • Topic: Postmodernism

  • Aspect: Texts (film, music, games)

  • Viewpoint: Postmodernism manipulates time and space

  • Instruction: "To what extent..."

TASK 2

Opinion:

Completely agree with this statement due to the texts studied showing how time doesn't exist and that space can be manipulated. However it manipulates many things- time and space being just a snippet of what is manipulated.

TASK 3

Detailed plan:

-opinion
-past
-present
-future
-conclude

  1. Intro
    i.      Opinion; agree
ii.     Fiske; pomo media makes people see things in the way media portray it, not from our own experiences.
iii.   Derrida; nothing belongs anywhere with anything so therefore postmodern media can (and do) manipulate things such as time and space in order to make the audience think

  2.  Past (5 years)
    - Inception: no concept of time as everything happens at the same time, the time frames in the different films are all different even though they happen at the same time.
The girl in it can manipulate space to how she wants it to look- can bend walls and create buildings and places etc
    - Inglorious Batsterds: wrong fonts for the wrong genres, wrong music in the wrong genres yet it works.
The characters speak the native language which means that it is more believable (therefore not manipulating space as it is authentic). Does manipulate time as the ending isn't how the war actually ended.
  3. Music
DJ Shadow- manipulating songs. Remixing old crap songs (cooking with gas) to make them sound funky and cool so that the public buys into it.
Manipulating songs from different time periods so that it can sound better. "Tears" by Giorgio Moroder (1970's) was then sampled by DJ Shadow on Organ Donor from his album released in 1996
    Adverts
Changing the music makes it relaxing and manipulates feelings regarding space
  4. Future
Postmodernism will continue to develop and be used when manipulating time and space in order to make the audience think. The idea that things are now considered to be "like a movie" (friske) is now applied to everyday life and that will continue to happen as advancements happen in film and in technologies applied to everyday life.
  5. Conclusion
Further depth and snappy brilliant closing line

TASK 4

  1. In your introduction try to avoid using the personal pronoun 'I'. You'd also benefit from actually stating what Fiske and Derrida said rather than paraphrasing. You don't quite set out your argument so the next paragraph (which opens with SPR) doesn't follow on logically from what you've written. The question relates directly to time and space (two 'truths') yet you deal more with generic conventions without explicitly linking them to the task. If you can establish that PoMo sets out to question and destabilise 'thruths' THEN you can begin to link generic conventions to TIME and SPACE but otherwise you cannot.

In paragraph 3 you do move onto Inception which links closely to the idea of time and space. Inception doesn't question whether time exists, it questions what is 'real' and does this through its manipulation of time and space. Commenting on whether this make the film enjoyable isn't what the question is concerned with, it wants specifics about how time and space are manipulated. You MUST refer to the dreams within the film as these are after all the central plot. Nolan manipulates time and space in order to challenge what is real as well as blend generic conventions from other films.

If you re read your section on Inception you'll notice that it wouldn't be possible for someone who hasn't seen the film to actually know what it is about. Ensure that when you give examples that you quickly summarise their 'plot' and make clear and detailed references.

Your section on Inglorious Basterds would make more sense to be next to the SPR section. Again, because your intro failed to identify why PoMo texts manipulate time and space this section (whilst better than the Inception one) fails to deal directly with the task. Again it is not possible for someone who has not seen the film to understand what happens in it. You need to be far more specific with the examples you give. The film is saturated with intertextual references and other PoMo references. The opening section alone references The Sound Of Music, fair tales, Spaghetti Westerns (specifically The Green Leaves Of Summer from the film The Alamo), Sherlock Holmes.

Your section on advertising is too short to develop your point, perhaps music would have been a better choice here.

In your conclusion you once again discuss whether a text is enjoyable, remember that isn't the question. HOW might PoMo media continue to manipulate time and space is what you are concerned with.

There is a lot of room for improvement Yasmin. You have 2 weeks to re write this essay, make sure your introduction deals only with the question. PoMo is centrally concerned with the notion of 'truth' so that MUST for the basis of your essay. You are marked equally on argument, terminology and examples, in this essay you offer no terminology at all and your examples are too vague.
